Diagnosing mattress dips:
1. Fully inflate the bed then place a broomstick, or straight edge, from one side of the mattress to the other.
2. Using a ruler, measure the distance between the lowest point on the mattress surface to the bottom of the broomstick, or straight edge.
If the mattress is fully inflated to a sleep setting of 50 and the distance from the bottom of the indentation to the top of the broomstick, or straight edge, is more than two inches, the mattress body impression exceeds the advised body impression depth and may need to be replaced. If the impression does not exceed two inches, there is no need for concern.
If you may be uncertain of the results, you can try to remove the comfort layer(s) from the bed and examine the comfort layer(s) by themselves on the floor.
Please note that when measuring a mattress immediately after installation, please allow a few hours before the comfort layers fully decompresses to their natural state.
General Information about Body Impressions:
Given that people usually sleep in the same area of their mattress every night, the comfort layers are continually compressed in the same area. Within two or three nights of compression, a small indentation will form on the mattress, this is known as a body impression. Body impressions are clinically proven to help support spinal alignment and provide the pressure relief needed for a great night's sleep. Many people can mistake this impression or dip as a defect in the mattress (i.e. sagging). Indentations within the two-inch range are a sign that the mattress is conforming to your body. This is not a defect.
A good mattress will conform to your unique shape, much in the way a new pair of shoes will conform to your foot.
